Hurricanes Top Indian River; Fall to Florida State

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving squad topped Indian River Community College 146-77 but fell to instate rival Florida State 96 to 129 in a tri-meet Friday evening at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

The Hurricanes (3-3 overall, 0-3 ACC) put up a good fight against a tough Florida State squad, which is currently ranked fourth in the ACC standings.

“I was very pleased with the way the team performed today,” said head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny after the meet. “We made a huge step today. We swam one of the best teams in the conference and raced them tough. It was very challenging but we learned a lot about ourselves today. The performance was one of the best of the season so far.”

Freshman Jenna Dreyer won the one-meter diving board and took second in the three-meter with NCAA Zone qualifying marks of 307.80 and 292.40.

Seniors Manon van Rooijen and Katalin Ferenczi were Miami’s only first place swimmers. Van Rooijen took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.91. The Westdorpe, Holland native also won second in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in with a season-best of 51.86. Ferenczi picked up a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a season best time of 2:03.23. She also came in second, behind Indian River’s Clare Clemens, in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:08.27, also a season best.

Freshman Lauren Shue dropped nearly 12 seconds off her 1650-yard freestyle time, clocking in second with a time of 17:01.70. She also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:04.93. Sophomore Tara Erwin also dropped an impressive amount of time, besting her previous 1650 time of 18:43.78 with a 17:30.08 performance, which was good enough for third place.

Sophomore Nancy Gajos snuck in to touch third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.77 before Kristen Lunak placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:07.05 to close out the individual events of the meet.

The Hurricanes came in second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet, with a season-best time of 1:38.80; a little over three seconds behind FSU’s winning relay.

In the men’s exhibition diving events senior Miguel Velazquez swept both the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 326.75 and 351.50, respectively.

“We are looking forward to South Carolina,” added Podkoscielny. “We hope to carry the momentum from this meet to tomorrow and the Georgia Tech Invitational next week.”

Please note that there has been a time change in Saturday’s meet against South Carolina which was initially scheduled for 11:00 am. The meet will now begin at 1:00 pm at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
