CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami Head Coach Jim Morris released the team’s 2005 baseball schedule on Tuesday as the Hurricanes prepare for their first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
“We have put together what I believe is another extremely tough and challenging schedule this season,” Morris said. “This might not be the typical Miami schedule because we will have several more road games this season with our entrance into the Atlantic Coast Conference. But the ACC is a new challenge that we look forward to.”
The 2005 season marks the first season in Miami history that the Hurricanes will be a part of a conference. The first 60 years of Hurricanes’ baseball was played as an independent and saw Miami win four national championships and 2,031 games with a .718 winning percentage.
“The ACC is a great fit for the University of Miami in athletics and as an academic institution,” Morris said.
UM still possesses an attractive home slate that features 36 games at Mark Light Field, including five conference series. The Hurricanes host old friends and now ACC foes Georgia Tech (March 25-27) and Florida State (April 22-24). Miami will play one non-conference series away from home against the Florida Gators on Feb. 18-20, and five conference series on the road.
Miami opens the season on Feb. 1 with Florida International at Mark Light Field for a 7 p.m. first pitch. The Hurricanes will play their annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m.
Major League Baseball’s Florida Marlins will also take on the Hurricanes in 2005 with a 3:05 p.m. game slated for March 1 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.
Before Miami can begin NCAA postseason play in 2005, they must now navigate the ACC Tournament, which will be played in Jacksonville from May 24-29 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Hurricanes’ schedule includes 25 games with teams (Florida, NC State, Georgia Tech, Oral Roberts, North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia, and Clemson) that qualified for NCAA Regionals in 2004 and nine games with teams (UF, GT, FSU) that advanced to super regional play.
UM’s home non-conference slate includes three-game series with High Point (Feb. 4-6), South Florida (Feb. 11-13), George Washington (Feb. 25-27) and Jacksonville (May 6-8). The Hurricanes will also play a four-game series with 2004 NCAA Regional qualifier Oral Roberts from March 31 to April 3.
After the season opener with FIU, only five mid-week games dot the Miami schedule with Northeastern (March 2), Pittsburgh (March 8), Quinnipiac (March 9), Rutgers (March 16) and at FIU (March 23) all set to play UM in single games.
Miami’s first taste of true ACC play comes in the friendly confines of Mark Light Field on March 4-6, when the North Carolina State Wolfpack visit Coral Gables. The Hurricanes and Wolfpack have played three times during the past two seasons in postseason play at `The Light’ with Miami winning all three. Duke will then visit Mark Light Field on March 11-13 for an ACC series.
UM’s first venture into the ACC includes road trips to Wake Forest (March 18-20), Virginia Tech (April 8-10), North Carolina (April 15-17), Virginia (May 13-15) and Clemson (May 19-21) to close the regular season.
The Hurricanes also host Maryland at `The Light’ on April 29 – May 1. It will mark the first time the Terrapins and Hurricanes have squared off on the baseball diamond. UM’s has also never faced 2005 opponents Virginia Tech, Quinnipiac and High Point.
Miami will be looking for its 33rd consecutive postseason appearance with the NCAA Regionals slated on June 4-6. The Super Regionals are scheduled for the following weekend, June 11-14. Miami will then be looking for its 21st trip to the College World Series, which runs from June 18-28 in Omaha, Neb.
