Q&A with Elizabeth Tyson

Sept. 27, 2004

Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Tyson took time off her busy schedule on Miami’s volleyball sqaud to give some insight on her life as a Hurricane.Tyson helped the Hurricanes win their inagural ACC match when they defeated in-state rival Florida State on Sept. 24th.

What are your interests and hobbies outside volleyball?
Basically normal things like relaxing, shopping, watching movies, reading…but most of all I love to eat!

Why did you choose the University of Miami?
I’m from Jacksonville so the opportunity to play close to home was something I was excited about. More importantly though was the chance to be a part of a brand new program and be given the opportunity to make history.

What was your first impression of Miami?
We have a beautiful campus that looks more like a resort than anything! Also, everyone I met in the athletic department and around campus made me feel welcome and I could not wait to commit to get back down here for school.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?
My Dad. Both my mom and my dad were athletic growing up but my dad was a mutli-sport athlete and was still able to maintain good grade throughout school. Unfortunately, I never got to see him compete, but from all accounts he was everything a great athlete should be.

When/why did you start playing volleyball?
All of my grade school friends played in grade school, and one day during try-outs in 8th grade, my ride accidentally left me. I went into the gym just to play with my friends and my coach told me I could be on the team because I was the tallest one out there! Not a very glamorous way to pick up a sport, but I was very lucky as to how things worked out.

What is your best sports memory?
Our win against Wisconsin on December 13, 2002, which advanced us to the NCAA Sweet 16 in only our second year.

Do you have any superstitions before matches?
I’m not very superstitious person, but I do have a few when it comes to volleyball. We all warm-up with a partner before out matches and Jamie Grass and I have warmed up together every single match we’ve played at Miami. I’m also the last person to shake hands with the other team.

What are your goals at Miami both in and outside volleyball?
Within volleyball I want to make may senior season the most memorable to date. I think the sky’s the limit for this team and I know that we’re capable of great things. Outside volleyball, I want to remain highly involved with the various activities I’m a part of on campus.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully in five years I will have graduated from law school and be working in an awesome firm!
