Aug. 24, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team capped off their preseason training with their annual Green and White scrimmage Tuesday afternoon at the Knights Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes divided into two teams of Green and White and played a three game intrasquad scrimmage. The coaching staff rotated players between games to group different teams and tryout probable lineups.
“We tried a few lineups and the team was able to adjust on the court,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “I am pleased with what I’ve seen this date and time even though we still have a lot of work to do.”
Among the many positives Lantagne Welch was pleased to see was “the excellent passing, their in game adjustments and the way the middles become more involved as the match progressed.”
Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Tyson was among the standouts in the Green and White Scrimmage. The Jacksonville, Fla. native registered ten kills in the three-game match.
“Elizabeth’s attacking was very consistent and effective,” noted Lantagne Welch.
Sophomore setter Jill Robinson made her mark in the Hurricanes’ attack averaging 12 assists per game while senior rightside hitter and preseason All-ACC selection, Valeria Tipiana was in her usual form tallying 10 kills and two aces.
“It’s always a great match-up to get into our uniforms and play like game day,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “This scrimmage is like a dress rehearsal for match time.”
The Hurricanes will kick of the 2004 season Wednesday, September 1 when they take on cross town rival Florida International at the Golden Panther Arena at 7 p.m.
