Cal State Fullerton Snaps Miami Win Streak
The Hurricanes’ 6-3 loss to Cal State Fullerton snapped Miami’s 13-game win streak. Miami’s 13-game span dated back to a 13-3 win over in-state rival Florida Atlantic, May 19 following a 2-0 loss to North Carolina, May 16.
Burt Moves into Ninth Place All-Time at Miami with 235 Games Played
Jim Burt moved into sole possession of ninth place in games played all-time at Miami. Burt now has 235 games played in four seasons at UM. Heading into Monday’s game with Cal State Fullerton, Burt was tied with former Hurricane Mike Kutner for ninth with 234 total games played by a UM player.
Uncharacteristic Errors Plague UM vs. Titans
Shortstop Roger Tomas and second baseman Adam Ricks each recorded errors in the second inning against Cal State Fullerton, snapping each Miami player’s streak of games without an error. Tomas ended a 22 game skid without a mistake in the field, dating back to April 30 versus Coastal Carolina while Ricks’ streak ended after 17 games going back to a May 9 contest with Jacksonville.
Tomas and Ricks’ errors were part of a four error outing by the Hurricanes which tied a season-high. Miami had previously recorded four errors in two games this season, once against Tennessee, Feb. 21 and once against Campbell, March 10.
Cockroft Continues to be a Victim of Unearned Runs at the College World Series
UM pitcher J.D. Cockroft struggles at the College World Series behind a weak UM defensive effort continued in his starting outing versus Cal State Fullerton as the Miami hurler went 3.2 innings with nine hits and five runs paired with four defensive errors by Hurricane fielders while on the mound.
Cockroft has now pitched seven full innings in College World Series games with only six of his 15 runs allowed being earned behind seven errors by Miami fielders.
Miami Rides Pitching Stamina
J.D. Cockroft’s starting effort against Cal State Fullerton was his shortest outing since a Feb. 26 loss to Florida International that saw the Miami starter allow eight hits, eight runs (three earned) with one walk and one strike out in 3.0 innings.
Cockroft’s 3.2 inning outing against the Titans Monday night was the first time a Miami starter has gone less than five innings since April 18 versus Florida State. In that stretch of 26 games, the Hurricanes posted an overall record of 22-3.
Jay Extends Hit Streak
Jon Jay’s infield single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning extended his hit streak to 14 games. The Hurricane freshman has now safely hit in consecutive games dating back to a 3 for 4 performances against Florida Atlantic, May 19.Miami – South Carolina Preview…The Hurricanes will take on national No. 2 seed South Carolina, Tuesday at 6 p.m (CST). The Hurricanes are 24-8 all-time against the Gamecocks. The two teams have never met in Omaha, but Miami holds an advantage in postseason play against USC at 7-3 – all in Regional or Super Regional games.
South Carolina won the last contest between the two schools, downing Miami, 6-4, June 9, 2002 in a five-run bottom of the ninth rally to defeat the Hurricanes in the deciding game of the 2002 Columbia Super Regional.
