North Carolina Snaps Hurricanes Six-Game Win Streak, 4-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The second-ranked Miami Hurricanes dropped their first game in almost two weeks, 4-1, to 16th-ranked North Carolina in front 1,564 fans at Mark Light Field.
The Tar Heels snapped UM’s six-game winning streak to improve to 35-14 on the season; Miami falls to 36-10. The Hurricanes are now 8-5 against Atlantic Coast Conference foes this season.
North Carolina right-hander Daniel Bard ran his record to 8-2 on the season with eight innings of work. He allowed eight hits and one run while striking out five and walking one.
J.D. Cockroft took the loss to fall to 6-4 on the season with six innings, allowing four runs on six hits. It snapped a personal four-game winning streak for Cockroft, who had not lost since April 9 at Florida State.
The big blow for the Tar Heels came in the fourth inning as first baseman Wes Moyer’s drive to right field went off the end of an outstretched Richard Giannotti’s glove. The three-RBI double cleared the bases and gave UNC a 4-0 lead.
North Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Marshall Hubbard’s 15th home run of the season.
Miami, which out hit the Tar Heels 8 to 7, had several rallies that were snuffed out by outstanding defensive plays.
The Hurricanes final plated a run in the sixth inning on Erick San Pedro’s RBI single. San Pedro paced Miami with three hits on the night.
Ricky Orta, Chiqui Chirino and Marcelo Albir combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
The Hurricanes and Tar Heels continue their three-game series with a 7 p.m. contest at Mark Light Field Saturday.
