CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The fourth-ranked Miami Hurricanes scored three runs in the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 6-4 win over Jacksonville in front of 1,499 fans at Mark Light Field.

The Hurricanes improve to 34-9 on the season and have won four straight and six of their last seven games. Jacksonville fell to 21-26 on the season and had its two-game winning steak over Miami snapped.

J.D. Cockroft threw seven innings while giving up eight hits and four runs (three earned) to secure his sixth win of the season and his fourth in a row.

Adam Ricks came through with his third game-winning hit of the season with a two-RBI single that brought three runs in for the Hurricanes after JU right-fielder Chris Kelly made his second error of the seventh inning with an errant throw home.

Burt put the Hurricanes on top with a solo home run to left field in the first inning. It was his 10th home run of the season and his 54th RBI.

Jacksonville tied it up at 1-1 with Zach Haniff’s solo home run off the scoreboard in the third inning. It was the first run scored against Cockroft in 24 innings, dating back to April 9 at Florida State.

The Hurricanes went back on top in the third inning on a RBI groundout by Jon Jay. The ground ball to second base scored Joey Hooft who tripled down the right-field line to lead off the inning.

JU came back with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. An error by Gaby Sanchez at third base got things rolling for the Dolphins who reeled off back-to-back doubles, highlighted by Jon Galui’s two-RBI double.

Ricks’ single to right field in the seventh inning brought in Gaby Sanchez, who lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, and Joey Hooft, who reached base on Kelly’s first error of the seventh. Pinch hitter Brendan Katin, who had walked, also scored on Kelly’s second error. Ricks was credited with two RBI, his 34th and 35th of the season.

Danny Gil relieved Cockroft in the top of the eighth and retired the side in order, striking out two batters. Gil finished things off in the ninth inning to earn his first career save.

Hooft added to the Miami tally in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out RBI single off of JU reliever Ashley Roque that extended the Hurricanes lead to 6-4.

The Hurricanes and Dolphins will play game two of this three-game series, Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
