Hurricanes Down American University, 5-2 in Final Regular Season Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) upended Jonah Fliegelman at No. 2 singles to clinch a win for the 49th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team over American University, 5-2 Tuesday evening at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in the Hurricanes’ final regular season match.
With the win, Miami ends a four-match skid to close out the season with an overall record of 12-7.
The Hurricanes took an early lead over the Eagles (11-7) with redshirt freshman P.J. Passalacqua (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) – playing for the first time together this season – downing Fliegelman and teammate Ruben Rivero, 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Miami’s duo of sophomore Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) and Hechtman sealed the doubles point with a win over Tushar Garg and Andreas Kulscar, 8-5 at No. 1 followed by UM sophomore John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Jeremiah Fuller’s (Emmaus, Pa.) win over Guilaume Tarralle and Juancarlo Vazquez, 9-7 at No. 2.
With a 1-0 overall lead in the match, Cohen cruised past Garg, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to give Miami a 2-0 advantage.
Passalacqua downed AU’s Sebastian Proisy, 6-2 in the first set at No. 6 before being forced to retire with an injury, cutting the Miami lead to one at 2-1.
Purcell then brought the Hurricanes within one point from the victory at No. 4, overtaking Vazquez, 6-3, 6-4 to bring the match score to 3-1.
Hechtman then solidified the UM win, downing Fliegelman in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 2 slot followed by a win by Fuller at No. 5 over Rivero, 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles would get their second and final point of the night when Tarralle, down 5-1 in the match tie-break, rallied to win over Hoyes, 7-5, 2-6, (10-8).
The Hurricanes return to action when they serve as the host school for the BIG EAST Championships, held April 29-May 1 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
