April 5, 2004
Austin, Texas (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami freshman Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) broke her own outdoor Canadian Junior triple jump record with a leap of 13.43 meters (44-00.75) Saturday at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
Charles, competing in her first collegiate outdoor meet, finished second in the event. Charles’ jump shattered her old Canadian junior record of 13.04 meters (42-09.50) by over one foot and is the top mark by a Canadian this outdoor season.
Her mark also set a new UM school-record and qualified her for the NCAA Regional Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 28-29, in Gainesville, Fla.
During the indoor season Charles recorded the top five triple jump marks by a Canadian including a Canadian Junior indoor record 13.53 meters (44-04.75) in her first collegiate meet.
She was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Field Performer after capturing conference titles in both the long jump and triple jump at the 2004 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships.
At the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Charles finished fourth in both the long jump and triple jump becoming the first Hurricane jumper to earn All-America honors in both events.
