Hurricanes Slip Against No. 15 TCU, 7-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 31st-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team could not overcome losing the doubles point along with a default point a No. 6 singles against No. 15 TCU as the Horned Frogs (12-1) downed the Hurricanes (9-3), 7-0 Wednesday afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Hurricanes took an early lead in doubles with teammates Tim Krebs and Colin Purcell winning in the No. 1 slot when TCU’s 36th-ranked tandem of Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini were forced to retire with an injury. TCU responded with a win a No. 3 doubles with Miami’s John Hoyes and Eric Hechtman falling to Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini, 8-4. With the doubles point at stake, Miami’s duo of Jeremiah Fuller and P. J. Passalacqua retired with an injury at No. 2, giving TCU a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Horned Frogs jumped to a 2-0 lead with the start of singles play when Passalacqua was forced to default at the No. 6 position.
Krebs, playing at No. 2 singles for only the second time of his career, could not hold off TCU’s Hector Almada who won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. TCU then clinched the match with Hechtman falling to No. 40 Menichini, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 position.
With the match already decided, TCU’s Robert Gallman defeated Fuller, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 followed by a win by Abreu over Purcell, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 – snapping Purcell’s ten-match win streak in singles play.
TCU’s closed out the match with a victory by Martin over Hoyes, 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot
The Hurricanes will return to Coral Gables Friday, hosting Wisconsin at 1 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
