Hurricanes Overtake Jacksonville, 6-1

The 34th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team captured the doubles point and won five of six singles matches in route to a 6-1 victory over in-state foe Jacksonville Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (5-0) opened the match against JU (1-5) with teammates Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) defeating Andres Rojas and Peter Wietrak, 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles position followed by Miami’s 41st-ranked tandem of Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) and Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) overtaking Ben Birkman and Christoph Mueller, 8-5 at the No. 1 spot to seal the doubles point for UM.
Purcell would add to the Hurricane lead in singles play, winning in straight sets at the No. 5 singles position over the Dolphins’ Rojas, 6-0, 6-0. Krebs followed suite, dowing JU’s Mueller, 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 slot to give UM a 3-0 lead. Cohen then clinched the match for Miami with a win over Martin Hehensteiger, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
Jeremiah Fuller would win at the No. 5 posistion, defeating Jacksonville’s Neil Sehgal, 6-1, 6-3 while Hechtman also took a victory at No. 3 with a win over Weitrak, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hurricanes will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 25, hosting in-state rival No. 7 Florida at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
