Hurricanes Tied for Lead at BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships after Day One

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s track and field team put together four first-place and 12 top-five finishes Saturday at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. to wrap up day one tied for first place with Pittsburgh heading into Sunday’s finals.

The Hurricanes and Panthers each finished the opening day with 40 total points.

Five-time All-American Lauryn Williams highlighted UM’s effort with an impressive performance in the preliminaries of the 60-meters, finishing .18 seconds ahead of Pittsburgh’s Kimberly Lyles with a top-place time of 7.41.

Williams would finish third in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 24.46 behind teammate and three-time All-American Dominique Darden who took the top spot with a time of 23.98.

Freshman Ginou Etienne took a first-place for UM in 500-meters with a time of 1:12.68,

Several Miami newcomers earned their first BIG EAST titles Saturday with freshman Tabia Charles edging out fellow Hurricane Brenda Faluade in the long jump with a first-place mark of 6.28 meters (20-07.25 feet) and freshman Ginou Etienne will return for Sunday’s finals in the 500-meters after a top qualifying time of 1:12.68.

Junior Amber Williams missed her first career BIG EAST Championship in the pentathlon by just two points behind Pittsburgh’s Tamara McGill who won with a total of 3845 points.

The Hurricanes will look to take their second consecutive BIG EAST Indoor title Sunday with finals scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
