Hurricanes Explode in 19-5 Win Over Florida

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Danny Gil made Hurricane fans flashback to older brother, David, as Gil pitched four sparkling innings to earn the win in Miami’s 19-5 victory over Florida Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field.
The top-ranked Hurricanes improve to 2-1 on the season and win the series two games to one, while the Gators fall to 3-2 on the season.
Miami’s leading hitters were Joey Hooft (5 for 6), Jim Burt (4 for 5) and Brian Barton (3 for 4). Richard Giannotti added two hits and drove in a career-high five runs. Hooft’s five hits and Burt’s four were career highs.
Hooft and Adam Ricks led off the game with back-to-back walks and Ryan Braun followed with his first hit of the season, The Braun single scored Hooft and Jim Burt followed with a RBI single to left field that scored Ricks. The Hurricanes added their third run on a fielder’s choice by Erick San Pedro that scored Braun.
Danny Gil relieved starter Brandon Camardese who was ineffective in two-plus innings of work. He gave up two runs on four hits but walked four and struck out three.
Gil came in after Camardese walked Ben Harrison and gave up a single to Jon Skorupski. He struck out Jeff Corsaletti, Austin Easley and Brian Jeroloman in succession to get out of the inning.
Gil’s performance was simply outstanding as the Columbus High School product pitched four innings, allowing only two hits while striking out a team season-high eight.
The Hurricanes would add two runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 5-2. Burt and Gaby Sanchez opened the inning with singles. Sanchez would come around to score on a RBI single by Giannotti.
Hooft lined a single to right field with two outs to score Erick San Pedro who had reached on fielder’s choice. Barton, who had reached on a bunt single, was thrown out at home on a close play at the plate to end the inning.
UM lengthened the lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning. Ricks led off the inning with a double and came around to score with a sacrifice by Burt and a wild pitch. Braun drew a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sanchez.
Chris Perez made his first appearance as a Hurricane and surrendered a pinch-hit home run to Stephan Barton, as the Gators made it a 7-4 game through six and a half innings.
Miami added seven runs in the seventh inning on seven hits, highlighted by Ricks two-run home run. Six of Miami’s hits came with two outs and the Hurricanes put the game out of reach.
UM added four runs in the eighth on an RBI triple of the bat of Burt, a two-run single by Giannotti and a RBI single by Jay.

— Six Hurricanes either set or tied career highs: Joey Hooft set a career mark with five hits; Brendan Katin collected his first career hit; Jim Burt’s four hits ties a career high; Brian Barton tied a career high with three hits; Richard Giannotti set a career mark with five RBI; Jon Jay got his first career hit.
— UM freshman Danny Gil made his first career appearance in the third inning in relief of Brandon Camardese. His brother David Gil, a third-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Reds in 2000, was the last Miami pitcher to throw back-to-back complete games. The elder Gil threw complete games against Jacksonville on May 12, 2000 and versus Florida Atlantic on May 27, 2000.
— Brendan Katin also collected the first hit of his career with a double off the wall in the eighth inning.

— Stephan Barton’s seventh-inning pinch-hit home run was the first pinch-hit home run allowed by the Miami pitching staff since Ricky Callison of Elon went deep on March 30, 2002, a span of 97 games.
— Gil’s eight strike out, two-hits performance in his UM debut was one of the most impressive since Alex Fernandez pitched a six-hit complete game against Central Florida on Feb. 5, 1989.
