Feb. 13, 2004
Fayetteville, Ark. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) broke her own school-record in the 200-meters posting a time of 23.24 at the Tyson Foods Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Williams time is the third fastest in the nation this season and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 12-13, in Fayetteville. Williams took second to Arkansas’ Veronica Campbell who recorded the fastest time in the nation (22.51) in finishing first.
A five-time All-American, Williams has now qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 60-meters and 200-meters.
Two other Hurricanes recorded NCAA provisional marks in the 200-meters including sophomore All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) who finished fifth in a time of 23.56, and sophomore All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) who placed 13th with a time of 23.94 seconds.
Greggs also recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meters finishing fifth in the 400-meter Invitational with a time of 53.49 seconds. In the unseeded 400-meter competition, freshman Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships finishing sixth with a time of 53.58.
The Hurricanes had two jumpers finish in the top-8 of the long jump with junior Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) placing fifth with a mark of 5.81 meters (19-00.75), and junior Chinela Davis (Haverstraw, N.Y.) taking eighth with leap of 5.66 meters (18-07.00).
Action at the Tyson Foods Invitational concludes Saturday. The meet is the final tune-up for the Hurricanes before they defend their BIG EAST Indoor Championship, Feb. 21-22, in Syracuse, N.Y.
