No. 35 Men's Tennis Upends No. 34 South Florida, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) rallied from behind to win at the No. 2 singles position to lift the 35th-ranked Hurricanes (2-0) to a 4-3 win over No. 34 South Florida (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes jumped early lead over the Bulls, taking the doubles point by winning at the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots.
South Florida answered in singles play, taking three straight points, with Matias Sigal downing UM’s Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.), 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6, followed by USF’s Juan Barragan defeating Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.), 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Andres Maroldt overtaking Miami’s Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany), 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4.
The Hurricanes’ Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) would keep UM alive, taking a point at the No. 3 spot with a win over Renato Silveira, 7-6, 6-3 and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) tied the score at three all with a win over USF’s Uli Kiendl in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
After falling in the first set 4-6 to USF’s Federico Barton, Hoyes rebounded to win 6-0 in the second frame. Heading into the third set, with the match on the line, Hoyes trailed early, falling behind 5-3 before answering with three four straight points to win 7-5, clinching the match for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 as they host in-state foe Florida Atlantic at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. Admission is free.
