Hurricanes Come Up Short Against Kansas
Jan. 9, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Tara Erwin (Ewing, N.J.) took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:19.98 for the University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team in loss to Kansas on Friday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
The Hurricanes, competing in their third dual meet in seven days, took first place in three events, but could not overcome the Jayhawks who prevailed 159 to 84.
“I think overall we did a pretty good job today,” head swim coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. “I think today was really hard on our team mentally and we looked tired. But you really can’t make excuses. (Competing in three meets in seven days) is a unique opportunity and we have to be ready to race.”
“Tara Erwin had a great 1000-yard freestyle,” Podkoscielny said. “I was also impressed by Lindsay Knapp (Walnut Creek, Calif.). She has been battling injury all season and has been on crutches up until today. So to see her on the blocks and racing was great.”
The women’s diving squad swept Kansas with freshman Heather Bounds (Austin, Texas) finishing first in the one-meter springboard with a score of 253.05, slightly ahead of teammate senior Emily Spychala (Tampa, Fla.) who turned in a score of 251.05. The two would trade places in the three-meter with Spychala taking the top spot with a score of 294.60 and Bounds recording 249.98.
The Hurricanes will compete for the final time at home this season on Saturday, hosting Houston and cross-town rival Florida International at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool beginning at 11 a.m.
