Past and Present Hurricanes Honored at Athletes for Academics Awards Ceremony

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Several representatives of the University of Miami, both past and present, were honored on Thursday night at the College of Arts and Sciences’ Center for Research on Sport in Society’s Third Annual Athletes for Academics Award Ceremony held at the UM Business School’s Storer Auditorium.
NFL Hall of Fame Tight End, Kellen Winslow, Sr. delivered the keynote addressed and introduced UM’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Paul Dee and former Miami coach, Isabella Hutchison as the recipients of the 2003 Leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics Award.
Tomas Jimenez, UM’s Assistant Athletic Director of Academics was presented with the 2003 Exemplary Mentorship of Student Athletes award.
Hurricane student-athletes Jim Burt (baseball), Tina Miller (golf), Mari Toro (tennis), Elizabeth Tyson (volleyball) and Jon Vilma (football) were also honored as 2003 Outstanding Scholar-Athletes.
Among others recognized at the ceremony were former Miami baseball coach, Ron Fraser who was awarded the 2003 Outstanding Career Achievement award and UM basketball’s Rodrigue Djahue who received the 2003 Outstanding Courage and Achievement award.
The Center for Research on Sport in Society (CRSS) was founded by the University of Miami’s College of Arts and Sciences to pursue the effects and what roles sports play in daily life and society.
“The unique and groundbreaking research and programmatic efforts of the Center for Research on Sport in Society further typify (the University of Miami’s) leadership role,” UM President Donna Shalala has noted. “It is no longer academics vs. athletics, but rather how we ensure that they continue to be inextricably bound.”
