Hurricanes Sweep Double Header from Savannah State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami baseball team swept a double header with Savannah State on Saturday, defeating the Tigers 11-2 and 6-4 in the seven-inning games at Mark Light Field.

Hurricane starter Brandon Camardese (8-0) recorded the win for the Hurricanes, pitching a complete game (seven innings) giving up seven hits, two runs (both earned), while striking out eight batters.

Vince Bongiovanni (6-3) returned to the mound after a four-week absence scoring the win in the second game. Bongiovanni went four strong innings, giving up four hits, two runs (both earned), while striking out nine batters.

Hurricane third baseman Gaby Sanchez led the Hurricanes offensively in the first game going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, including a two-run home run. Left fielder Joey Hooft led the way in the second game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI on a two-run home run.

Game 1 Recap

The Hurricanes took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out three-run home run by Brian Barton. It was Barton’s sixth homer of the season.

Miami extended its lead 5-0 in the second inning on a two RBI single to left field by Ryan Braun. Additionally, Braun’s RBI were his team-best 59th and 60th of the season.

Gaby Sanchez’ two-run home run over the left field wall in the third inning gave the Hurricanes a seven-run lead. An RBI single to right center by Erick San Pedro extended Miami’s lead 8-1.

Savannah State got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a solo home run over the left field scoreboard by Tigers’ catcher Jeffrey Urgelles.

Miami added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Joey Hooft, scoring Brian Barton.

Pinch hitter Greg Dini gave the Hurricanes a nine-run lead in the sixth on a solo home run. It was Dini’s second home run of the season. A sacrifice fly by pinch hitter T.J. Hacker extended the Hurricanes’ lead 11-1.

The Tigers added another run in the seventh and final inning but fell short 11-2.

Game 2 Recap

Miami got on the scoreboard in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jim Burt, scoring Adam Ricks from third.

Savannah State tied the game, 1-1 on an RBI double to left field by Doug Remer, scoring William Holly.

Joey Hooft’s third home run of the season with Gaby Sanchez on base in the second inning gave Miami a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers cut the lead to 2-3 in the fourth inning on Remer’s second RBI hit of the game.

An RBI single by Greg Dini and a sacrifice fly by Paco Figueroa put the Hurricanes up 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.

Savannah State added two more runs in the fifth inning, 5-4, on a two-RBI single by Raymel Llerena. With the bases loaded, the Hurricanes ended the inning on a double play as Danny Figueroa caught a fly ball in shallow center field and threw out Jeffrey Urgelles at home plate.

A single down the left field line by Brian Barton, scoring Ricks extended Miami’s lead to 6-4.

The Hurricanes will complete the series with Savannah State Sunday, May 17 at noon at Mark Light Field.
