Hurricanes to Host Savannah State for a Four-Game Set

The 15th-ranked Miami baseball team will play its first four-game series of the season as Savannah State visits Coral Gables this weekend.
UM takes a 33-11-1 record into the series that opens on Friday night at 7 p.m. with the inaugural South Florida Mascot Olympics. Sebastian the Ibis, The Miami Maniac, Billy the Marlin, Burnie, T.D. and Stanley C. Panther will all be in attendance.
The Hurricanes will play their first double header of the season on Saturday with game one getting underway at 5 p.m. at Mark Light Field. The second game will follow 40 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The series will conclude on Sunday with first pitch set for noon.
J.D. Cockroft will get the call on the mound Friday night. The left-hander is 8-2 with a 2.14 ERA. Cockroft has pitched 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings.
Brandon Camardese with pitch the first game of the twinbill on Saturday. He is 7-0 on the season with a 5.07 ERA. Vince Bongiovanni will make his first start in four weeks in game two. Bongiovanni is coming off of a strained forearm. Alex Perez will go to the hill on Sunday in the series finale.
Savannah State, which brings a 34-11 record into the series, will send four right-handers to the mound with Carlos Markyna (6-1, 2.94 ERA) starting the opener on Friday night. Angel Garcia and Ricardo Castillo will start both ends of the double header on Saturday, while Xavier Martinez will start Sunday’s game.
The Tigers are hitting .330 as a team and are led by Clay Cleveland, who sports a .349 average. Doug Remer is close behind with a .348 mark. Cleveland leads the squad in home runs with seven and is second in RBIs with 50. Jeffrey Urgelles is Savannah Stat’s top RBI producer with 51, while Brandon Pope leads the way with 28 stolen bases.
Ryan Braun leads the Hurricanes with a .361 average, 13 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .650 slugging percentage. Adam Ricks is second on the team in hitting with a .349 mark, while Gaby Sanchez is hitting .339 with a team high 18 doubles. Danny Figueroa is hitting .331 with 31 stolen bases, which ranks 10th nationally at .66 per game.
