Hurricanes Win Fifth BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, CT (hurricanesports.com) – Freshman Charlette Greggs (MiamiNorthwestern) won the 200-meters, 400-meters and ran the second leg of theBIG EAST Champion 4×100-meter relay to lead the University of Miami to itsthird consecutive BIG EAST Outdoor Championship and its fifth title in thelast six seasons.

Following the meet head coach Amy Deem and her staff were honored as theBIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the third consecutive year and thesixth time in the last eight seasons.

Miami, which trailed Notre Dame by four points heading into the final dayof competition, won seven events on Sunday en route to 166 points, the mostat a BIG EAST Championship meet since 1984. Notre Dame finished a distantsecond with 126 points.

With the victory the Hurricanes recorded a sweep of the BIG EAST women’strack and field championships. Miami won the BIG EAST Indoor title earlierthis year.

“I am very proud of how we performed today,” said head coach Amy Deem. “Iam especially proud of our seniors and what they have been able accomplishover the last four seasons. To win three BIG EAST Championships in four yearsis a remarkable accomplishment. They have certainly set the bar high for thisprogram.”

Greggs recorded a BIG EAST Championship record time of 23.18 seconds inwinning the 200-meters while posting a time of 52.17 seconds in winning the400-meters.

“Charlette (Greggs) is a tough competitor,” added Deem. “The 200-meter,400-meter double is very difficult to pull off. It just shows you howdedicated she is to this team. The competitiveness of her and Lauryn(Williams) is incredible.”

Greggs, along with sophomore All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA),senior All-American Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) and freshman IndiaRansom (Largo, MD) won the 4×100-meter relay with a BIG EAST Championshiprecord time of 44.58 seconds.

Williams, the World Junior Champion at 100-meters, defended her BIG EAST100-meter Championship in a time of 11.62 seconds. Williams also took secondin the 200-meters in a time of 23.30 seconds.

Also defending her BIG EAST Championship was Lawson in the 100-meterhurdles. Lawson, ranked 10th in the NCAA in the event, posted a Stadiumrecord time of 13.40 in winning her second consecutive BIG EAST title.

Senior All-American Patricia Pearson won her first BIG EAST Outdoor800-meter title in a time of 2:06.94. Junior Terria Madison (Columbus, GA)placed third in the event with a time of 2:10.87.

The Hurricanes closed the meet in grand fashion winning the 4×400-meterrelay for the second consecutive season with a BIG EAST Championship recordtime of 3:33.38. The team of senior All-American Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia,PA), freshman All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, PA), sophomoreWiande Moore (Spring, TX) and junior All-American Kitoya Carter (MiamiNorthwestern) broke the old BIG EAST mark set by the Hurricanes last season.

Wade also scored in the 400-meter hurdles taking second with a personalbest time of 57.62, while Carter finished third in the triple jump (12.75meters/41-10.00) and sixth in the 400-meters (53.82).

Miami had a total of four runners score in the 400-meters includingsenior All-American Sashanie Simpson (Miami, FL) who took fifth in a time of53.67 seconds and senior All-American Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St.Thomas Aquinas) who took seventh (57.06).

The 4×800-meter relay of Madison, Whittaker, freshman Zully Marie Pasqual(South Dade) and Pearson finished fourth with a time of 8:49.89.

Miami throwers continued to impress this weekend as senior Megan Cobbfinished fifth in the hammer with a toss of 47.28 meters (155-01.00). JuniorAdrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) won the shot put championship on Saturday.
