Seminoles Slide By Hurricanes, 1-0

Tallahassee, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Miami hurler J.D. Cockroft made only one mistake and that was in the first inning on the second pitch of the game, unfortunately Florida State’s leadoff hitter Stephen Drew deposited that mistake over the right-field fence.
The top-ranked Seminoles went on for a 1-0 win in front of a season-high 4,705 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night, as FSU’s starting pitcher Trent Peterson went 6.2 innings allowing four hits and striking out five UM hitters.
The 14th-ranked Hurricanes fall to 28-10-1 on the season, while FSU improves to 37-6-1.
Cockroft walked the first two hitters of the second inning but worked out of trouble, after a sacrifice bunt by Bryan Zech, with strikeouts of Matt Sauls and pinch hitter Daniel Wardell.
Florida State never really threatened again as Cockroft threw his second complete game of the season with eight innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out five. It was the first complete-game loss for a Miami pitcher since UM pitching coach J.D. Arteaga went eight innings against at Texas on Feb. 28, 1997.
The Hurricanes were led by Danny Figueroa and Brian Barton at the plate, both collecting two hits apiece.
Miami posed its first real scoring threat in the seventh inning with back-to-back singles with one out from Erick San Pedro and Brian Barton. The Seminoles got out of the inning with a fielders choice from Gaby Sanchez that forced San Pedro at third base and ground ball to second base that forced Sanchez.
The Hurricanes threatened again in the eighth with a one-out single from Danny Figueroa. He moved to second on a fielders choice by Adam Ricks and was stranded at second base on a ground out to shortstop by Ryan Braun.
The two teams will return to the diamond on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium on the Florida State campus. Left-hander Brandon Camardese (5-0, 4.82 ERA) will take the mound for the Hurricanes against Matt Lynch (9-2, 3.53 ERA)
