MIAMI (www.hurricanesports.com) – A crowd estimated at 15,000 spectators watched the Miami Hurricanes football team conduct its final full-scale scrimmage at the Orange Bowl Saturday morning as the Hurricanes produced an entertaining practice as part of Fox Sports Net CanesFest.
An exciting passing attack and an opportunistic defense were the hallmarks of the length scrimmage in which the Hurricanes used 40 minutes of game clock and an intricate scoring system. The Hurricanes Defense won the scrimmage by a 49-41 margin on the scoreboard via a scoring system that, in addition to the traditional offensive point totals, awarded defensive points on the basis of 10 points for a defensive touchdown, six points for a turnover and one point for holding the offense to a three downs and punt possession.
The scrimmage lasted approximately 90 minutes. The game was four 10-minute periods in length with a continuous clock over the final two periods of action. The Miami defense produced one fumble recovery return for a touchdown and one blocked punt for a score plus five quarterback sacks while holding the UM offense to just 37 rushing yards on 41 attempts (0.9 avg.). Overall, the Miami offense produced 293 yards on 77 plays (3.8 avg.).
Meanwhile, the UM air attack blossomed after a struggle in last week’s scrimmage. Quarterbacks passed for 256 yards and two touchdowns while completing 19 of 36 attempts without an interception. Derrick Crudup started with the first unit and went on to complete 7 of 8 attempts for 129 yards and one touchdown. Brock Berlin split time with Crudup with the first team and completed 8 of 16 attempts for 129 yards and a score, a 36-yard completion to receiver Darnell Jenkins. Marc Guillon finished the day 3 of 7 for 25 yards while Kyle Wright was 1 of 5 for 2 yards.
Linebacker D.J. Williams led all tacklers with seven stops, all unassisted, and two tackles for losses. Cornerback Antrel Rolle had six tackles (five solos), while middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma had five tackles and caused a fumble. Safety Marcus Maxey also had five stops, all unassisted. Defensive end Baraka Atkins had two quarterback sacks and returned a fumble recovery for a score. Others with quarterback sacks were end Thomas Carroll, tackle Vince Wilfork. End John Square and tackle Orien Harris combined for one other sack.
Reserve fullback Talib Humphrey continued an excellent spring by leading all rushers with 40 yards on seven carries (5.7 avg.) including a 14-yard burst. Tailback Jarrett Payton handled the lion’s share of work at the position while Frank Gore sat out the practice nursing a sore shoulder. Payton carried 15 times for 15 yards, including a long rush of nine yards. Quarterback Marc Guillon had the longest rush of the day, a 16-yarder on a scramble.
Tight end Kellen Winslow led all receivers with 101 yards on five receptions (20.2 avg.) including a 39-yard catch from Derrick Crudup. Flanker Roscoe Parrish had four catches for 64 yards (16.0 avg.) including a 35-yarder. Jason Geathers (2-13), Jarrett Payton (2-11) and Kevin Everett (2-11) had two catches apiece. Everett caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Crudup while split end Darnell Jenkins had a 36-yard scoring catch from Berlin for his only grab of the day.
In special teams, Jon Peattie averaged 43.0 yards on two punts and made a pair of field goal attempts from 20 and 49 yards. Mark Gent was successful on his only field goal attempt, a 52-yarder that sailed through the uprights in the west end zone.
The Hurricanes will resume spring practice Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus. All remaining practices are closed to the public.
Saturday’s practice was the 12th of 15 sessions that will conclude on Friday, April 11.
