No. 22 Women's Tennis Falls To No. 21 Washington

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 22 ranked Miami women’s tennis team fell 6-1 on the road to No. 21 Washington at the Nordstrom Lloyd Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

Miami drops to 9-3 overall while the Huskies improve to 7-1 on the season.

Freshman Melissa Applebaum (Coral Gables, Fla.) was the lone singles winner for the Hurricanes with a straight set victory.

Applebaum beat Darija Klaic 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Seniors Abby Smith (Chicago, Ill.) and Igna deVilliers (South Africa) downed Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri 8-2 at No. 2 doubles for Miami.

The tandem of Claire Carter and Darija Klaic downed Megan Bradley and Melissa Applebaum 9-7 in the No. 1 position, while at the No. 3 position duo Erin Boisclair and Dinka Hadzic defeatedMari Taro and Staci Stevens 8-5.

UW’s Carter defeated Bradley 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 position. In the No. 3 position Husky Sumantri defeated Toro in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

UW’s Boisclair downed Sihem Bennacer 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 4 position. Colleen Gray defeated Staci Stevens 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 position, while Husky Dinka Hadzic defeated Sara Robbins 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 6 position.

Miami faces Portland at 7 p.m. EST Saturday night in Seattle, Wash.
