UM Men's Tennis Takes First Loss
Feb. 14, 2003
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The No. 34-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team took its first loss of the season Friday afternoon, falling 6-1 to No. 6 Florida in Gainesville.
UM arrived on the Gators’ home court with an unblemished 3-0 record that included a 4-3 victory over previously No. 10-ranked Texas A&M.
In spite of the score in favor of the Hurricanes’ in-state rivals, coach Bryan Getz said that he was pleased with the effort his team showed on the court.
“I see this match as a stepping stone for us,” Getz said. “We saw what a top-5 (caliber) team looked like and the guys played their best.”
The biggest surprise of the match was Florida’s Hamid Mirzadeh’s 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 upset win over No. 9 Todd Widom of Miami.
The Gators won five singles matches with John Hoyes taking the Hurricanes’ lone win of the match. Hoyes defeated Eleazar Magallan 7-6, 6-2.
“The scores didn’t indicate how hard we fought,” he said. “Our guys showed improvement even over last week (when UM defeated Texas A&M).”
The Hurricanes’ next match is Sunday at noon against Florida A&M at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the Coral Gables campus.
