CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami baseball team improved to 2-0 on the young season behind the pitching of starter Vince Bongiovanni and a balanced 14-hit attack Thursday night at Mark Light Field as UM disposed of Campbell 13-2.

The Hurricanes staff surrendered only three hits, while striking out 16 and walking only two.

Miami starter Vince Bongiovanni threw six innings of one-hit baseball, as his offensive teammates pounded out 13 runs and 14 hits, including four home runs. Freshman Marcelo Albir took over in the seventh and promptly struck out the side, giving way to another freshman Andrew Lane in the eighth. Lane gave up two hits and two runs before freshman Tom King closed it out in the ninth, striking out two.

UM jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single from sophomore Brian Barton.

Second baseman Ryan Braun ripped a shot into the right-centerfield gap to begin the second inning. The Hurricanes then worked the hit-and-run to perfection, as Matt Barket lined a single between shortstop and third base. Braun then stole third base and proceeded to score on a pass ball by the Campbell catcher. After Danny Figueroa drew a walk, both Figueroa and Barket scored on a two-RBI single by Adam Ricks to give the Canes a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Barton did a little more work at the plate in the top of the third inning, blasting a 2-1 pitch deep over the left-centerfield wall. The home run was the first of his Hurricane career.

UM continued to play long ball in the fourth inning as shortstop Paco Figueroa duplicated Barton’s third-inning shot with a deep drive into the palm trees in left-centerfield. Danny Figueroa reached on an error by the third baseman and advance to second on the throw. The play ended up chasing Campbell’s starting pitcher Rob Finch after 3.0 innings of work. Jim Burt added another Hurricane home run, lining a shot down the left-field line. Barton reached base on the Fighting Camel’s third of the night and scored on a single by Ryan Braun, who advanced to second on CU’s fourth error of the game.

Miami tacked on another run in the fifth inning on a series of miscues by the Camels. UM scored two runs behind a single by pinch hitter Alex Blanco, two walks a pass ball and a wild pitch. Third baseman Gaby Sanchez tallied the final run for UM with a home run to centerfield.

The Hurricanes face off with Campbell again on Friday in game two of the three-game set at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
