CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – Despite several strong incividual performances, he University of Miami swimming and diving team fell to Florida State Saturday at the Norman Whitten Pool.

The men’s side fell 178-28 while the women’s squad was defeated 143-100.

For the men’s squad, diver Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City, Mexico) provided highlights for the Hurricanes when he thwarted all challengers, scoring a 149.05 in the 3-meter diving event and 208.00 in the 1-meter.

Ryan Rykaczewski (Satellite Beach, Fla.) finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:48.57 and second in the 200 butterfly with 1:56.44. Bjorn Boquist (Bloomington, Ind.) finished fifth with 22.60 in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free with 49.82.

Among the women, Manon Van Rooijen (Westdorpe, Holland) took the top spot in both the 200 free (1:52.19) and the 100 free (51.89). She also finished second in the 500 free (5:11.20).

Adrien Ferguson (Oklahoma City, Okla.) finished third in the 1000 free (10:34.66) and Megan Kinsella (Calgary, Canada) and Mary Carriere (Ft. Myers, Fla.) finished fifth (10:47.24) and sixth (11:17.60) respectively in the same event.

Christine Williams (Trenton, NJ) won the 50 free, clocking in at 23.98. Christina Swanson (Bainbridge Island, Va.), Erin Johns (Saltsburg, Penn.), and Josie Huffman (Mandeville, La.) finished fifth, sixth, and eighth in the 50 with times of 25.22, 25.29, and 26.

In the 200 IM, Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) took second with 2:07.45, Katalin Ferenczi came in third in 2:09.88, and Lindsa Knapp (Walnut Creek, Calif.) arrived in sixth in 2:17.99, and Chantal Hewitson (Quebec, Canada) came in seventh with a time of 2:26.53.

Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) placed first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 198.60 and Emily Spychala (Odessa, Fla.) took second with 175.60.

UM’s Elaine Schwartz and Adrien Ferguson took fourth and fifth respectively in the 200 fly with times of 2:09.80 and 2:14.12.

Katalin Ferenczi won the 200 back in 2:05.10. Tammy Watts (Centennial, Colo.), Lindsay Knapp, and Kate Patterson finished sixth, seventh, and eighth in the 200 back with times of 2:09.90, 2:12.00, and 2:16.50.

UM took the top spots in the 3-meter diving event with Katie Beth Bryant finishing first with a score of 135.95 and Emily Spychala finishing second with 134.55.

Hurricane swimmer Meghan Clabby (Coral Springs, Fla.) finished second in the 200 breast with 2:27.73. Christina Swanson took fourth with 2:29.24.

In the 400 medley relay, the Hurricanes took second, fourth, and fifth place. UM took second, fifth, and sixth in the 400 free relay.
