June 13, 2002

NEW YORK, N.Y., – University of Miami president Donna Shalala, the former Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Clinton who has done extensive work supporting educational programs nationwide, has been named winner of the Dick Enberg Award and will be honored at the Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame® induction ceremonies at the Hilton New York on Thursday, June 27.

The award was established five years ago in honor of CBS sportscaster Dick Enberg, who will present this year’s award to Shalala. It is given annually to “a person whose actions and commitments have furthered the meaning and reach of the Academic All-America programs and/or the student-athlete while promoting the values of education and academics.” Shalala is the first female to win the award.

Before becoming HHS secretary in 1993, Shalala served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin, where she helped raise more than $400 million for the university’s endowment and spearheaded a $225 million state-private industry partnership program that added to the university’s research facilities. In 1992, Business Week named her one of the nation’s top five managers in higher education. She also has received more than 30 honorary degrees and won the 1992 National Public Service Award.

“When this award was established, it was to recognize the extraordinary achievements of people like Donna Shalala. She has been be an exemplary role model for young people across the country for many years,” stated Enberg.

Verizon (formerly GTE), in conjunction with the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), established the Hall of Fame in 1988 to honor former college scholar-athletes who have excelled in their professions and have made substantial contributions to their communities. The 2002 inductees are Dr. Richard Balzhiser, Susan Cassidy, John Stockton, Susan Walsh and Governor Raymond Shafer.

Under an agreement with CoSIDA, Verizon has been the exclusive sponsor of the Academic All-America program since 1985. Verizon, America’s literacy champion, strongly believes that literacy is a key ingredient to success and outstanding achievements in life. The Academic All-America program is part of Verizon Reads, the company’s national campaign to promote literacy through corporate philanthropy, partner collaboration, community outreach, and customer and employee participation.
