Scenes from Gainesville: The Diary of Danny Figueroa

June 1, 2002

Wow, I never realized how quickly the morning would get here. I guess I was a little more tired than I thought. We got up at 9:30 this morning and went to breakfast at about 10 am. From there, I did something that I said in this diary I wouldn’t do. Some of the guys had some bagels, and we went down to the edge of the lake and fed the gators. It was actually pretty cool. Those things are amazing. The amount of force that they snap their jaws shut with is incredible. At 11 this morning, we got together to watch film. We were looking at the pitcher that we’d be facing today, Alex Hart. He’s got some good stuff, but I’m sure that we’ll be able to figure him out. We’re getting ready to go to Santa Fe Community College for BP. From there, we’ll head to the University of Florida. Normally, we’d go to the stadium but Bethune Cookman and FIU are playing in the elimination game this morning. We’ll find out when we get there which of these two teams are going home. Wish us luck.

Wow, what a game. Kiki Bengochea pitched an incredible game. The final score was 7-2. In case you didn’t hear, Brad Safchik came up with a big hit, driving in 2. At that point, we had been tied 1-1. Danny followed that up a few batters later with a 3 run home run. He hit it over the UF Batting Practice Cages in right-center field. Earlier today, Bethune Cookman beat FIU, so UF is playing Bethune right now in an elimination game. We’ll face the winner of this game tomorrow at 1.

After the game, I went with my family to Outback Steakhouse. When we got there, we realized that most of the team and staff had chosen the same place for dinner. It was great. Everybody was relaxed and in a great mood. I’m just hoping that we can keep up this momentum and win the first game tomorrow. If we don’t, then we’ll have to play a second game.

We’ve got an 11 pm curfew today, so I’m going to have to cut this diary short tonight. I’ll pick it up again tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I’ll have good news to report in the evening. Until then, have a good night.
