Matt Mulvaney goes the distance

Sophomore Matthew Mulvaney, a cross-country runner on the men’s track team, has been selected the May 2002 Academic All-Star after excelling both on and off the track.
Mulvaney, who studies music business and entertainment industry, has accumulated an excellent grade point average in his major and has been recognized on the Dean’s List, AD Honor Roll, Book Buster, and BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He has also made numerous athletic accomplishments in his first two years at Miami.
Last season, Mulvaney participated in the 1,500-meters, the 3,000-meters, the 3,200-meters, the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters. He was the only Miami runner to compete in the 10,000 meter, in which he placed 9th at the BIG EAST Tournament in Storrs, CT (31:11.68).
His freshman year, he scored in all eight meets, finishing 15th at the Florida Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships, 66th at the BIG EAST Championships, and 71st at the NCAA South Region Championships. His time of 26.17 at the BIG EAST Championships was a season-best over 8,000 meters. He also competed in the 1,500-meters and 3,000-meters during the outdoor season, recording season-bests in both events.
In high school, Mulvaney was on the First-team All Western Massachusetts cross-country team and set course records at South Hadley High School and Turner Falls. He was recognized as a Daily Hampshire Gazette all-star for cross-country and track.
