UM Track Hands Out Annual Awards

Coconut Grove, FL (hurricanesports.com) – All-American Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) was named the Most Valuable Women’s Track Athlete while seniors Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) and Aaron Moser (Bonne Terre, MO) were named co-Most Valuable Men’s Track Athletes at the annual University of Miami Track and Field banquet at Monty’s in Coconut Grove.

Clarke, who was also won the award last season, is a four-time and All-American and five-time BIG EAST Champion in the triple jump. This season she defended her BIG EAST indoor and outdoor titles, including a BIG EAST record leap of 13.35 meters (43-09.75) at the recently completed outdoor championships. Clarke currently ranks second in the nation in the triple jump and 11th in the nation in the long jump.

Martin also takes home the award for the second-consecutive season. Martin recorded the Hurricane’s top marks during the indoor season in the 55-meter hurdles, 60-meter hurdles and 200-meters while posting the team’s fastest times in 200-meters, 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles during the outdoor season. At this season’s BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships, Martin finished first in the 60-meter hurdles becoming the Hurricanes’ first BIG EAST Champion in a hurdling event.

Moser, who redshirted the 2001 season, returned this year to record school-records in the heptathlon and decathlon. Moser finished second in the heptathlon at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships and will compete in the decathlon at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Freshmen Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA) was named the women’s Most Outstanding Newcomer while freshman Tanard Davis was honored as the men’s Most Outstanding Newcomer. Junior Megan Cobb (Ypsilanti, MI) was named the women’s track Most Improved Athlete while junior Jabari Ennis (Kingston, Jamaica) took home the honor on the men’s side.

Other award recipients included Jeff Gaulrapp (Baldwinsville, NY) and Jennifer Geroux (Balto, MD) as Most Valuable Cross Country runners. Sophmore Matt Mulvaney (South Hadley, MA) as the Most Improved Cross Country Runner. Junior Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) was named Comeback Athlete of the Year. Junior Andre Johnson (Miami Senior) was given the Men’s Track Coaches Award while seniors Jenise Winston (League City, TX) and Wyllesheia Myrick (Miami Northwestern) were awarded the women’s Coaches Awards. The Dr. Matt Karlafris Award given annually to the team’s top walk-on went to Aaron Bass (Hillsborg, OR) for the second consecutive season.
