May 4, 2002

Storrs, CT (hurricanesports.com) – Miami junior Andre Johnson (Miami Senior) and freshman Tanard Davis advanced to the finals of the 100-meters, while senior Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) advanced to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Storrs, CT.

Johnson, a wide receiver on the UM football team and co-MVP of Miami’s 37-14 Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska, won his preliminary heat with a time of 10.72. Davis finished fourth in his heat with a time of 10.89 to move into Sunday’s final.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Martin recorded a time of 14.62 to advance. Martin, who won the BIG EAST Indoor 60-meter hurdle title earlier this year, is trying to become the first Hurricane in school-history to win both the BIG EAST 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles championships in the same season.

Miami also received strong performances from its distance runners. Senior Jeff Gaulrapp (Baldwinsville, NY) finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.89, while sophomore Matt Mulvaney (South Hadley, MA) took ninth in the 10,000-meters with a time of 31:11.68.
