Baseball Falls 10-1 To No. 13 Long Beach State

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – No. 13 Long Beach State (25-12) defeated the Miami Hurricanes (20-19), 10-1, to conclude the three-game series in front of 1,202 fans Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Stadium.

Hurricane starter Vince Bongiovanni (0-4) took the loss going two innings, giving up six hits, five runs (three earned) and one walk. Long Beach State starter (2-1) recorded the win pitching six innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, and three walks, striking out six and hitting one batter.

Long Beach State got on the scoreboard, 1-0, in the first on a Nick Covarrubias RBI groundout to short which allowed Kevin Randel to score and it never looked back.

In the second, the 49ers took a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to right by Mike Hofius scoring Chris Wright from third. They extended the lead to five runs, 5-0, in the third inning scoring three runs on four hits, including consecutive RBI doubles to left center by Covarrubias and Paul McAnulty. Long Beach State added two runs, 7-0, in the fourth on Covarrubias’ two-run double. The 49ers scored three times in the eighth to give them the 10-1 victory.

The Hurricanes avoided the shutout in the sixth, 7-1, with an RBI double by Kevin Howard scoring Danny Figueroa from third. D. Figueroa led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher.

Miami faces FAU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to No. 12 North Carolina for a three-game series with the Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. The Sunday game time has been changed to 1 p.m. from an original 2 p.m. start.
