Coral Gables, Fla. — The Rutgers and Miami men and Boston College and Virginia Tech women claimed victories on the first day of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships held April 19-21 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.

MEN
In the morning session, No. 5 seed Rutgers upset fourth-seeded Boston College, 4-3. At No. 1 singles, Akshay Jagdale won the deciding point for the Scarlet Knights, defeating BC’s Justin Slattery in three sets. Rutgers advances to face No. 1 seed Notre Dame in the morning match on Saturday.

No. 3 seed Miami used victories at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to defeat sixth-seeded West Virginia, 4-0. The Hurricanes will take on No. 2 seed Virginia Tech at noon on Saturday, while Boston College and WVU will meet in the fifth-place match at 3 p.m.

WOMEN

No. 4 seed Boston College took two of three doubles matches from No. 5 seed Syracuse to claim the point. The Eagles went on to win 4-0 and earned the right to face defending champion and No. 1 seed Notre Dame at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Ines Khelifi, Meredith Vincent and Bridget Bruner each earned straight set victories as No. 3 seed Virginia Tech defeated sixth-seeded Rutgers, 4-0. The Hokies advance to face second-seeded Miami at noon on Saturday. Rutgers and Syracuse will play for fifth-place at 3 p.m.
