Miami Lakes, FL (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami sophomore Camilla Hilland (Lommedalen, Norway) sank an 18-foot par putt on the tournament’s final hole to hold off a late charge by Florida State’s Kristin Tamulis and win the Ryder Florida Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship at Don Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, FL.

Hilland, the first Hurricane since Tracy Kerdyk in 1988 to win the state championship, posted a three-round total of 219 to finish one-stroke ahead of Tamulis (220).

“This is a very special,” said Hilland. “I felt very relaxed coming into the tournament so I thought I would play well. But to win here in front of my family and friends makes it even more special.”

Hilland, who posted consecutive rounds of 70 to open the championship, led the tournament by five strokes after two rounds. But the sophomore struggled on Sunday recording a 79 in the final round.

“I had trouble getting into a rhythm today,” added Hilland. “The wind made things very difficult for everyone, but I was able to fight through it and hold on for the win.”

Strong winds and cold weather played havoc with the tournament field, as only 22 of the 65 competitors were able to break 80 on the final day.

Tamulis, who was in third and trailed Hilland by six-strokes heading into the final day, registered a 74 on Sunday, including a one-under-par 35 on the back nine to pull to within one stoke of the lead. Hilland, however, finished the day with three consecutive pars to hold onto the victory.

“Camilla (Hilland) had a great tournament,” said head golf coach Lela Cannon. “There are so many great players and so many great teams competing here that to be able to handle the pressure and hold on for the victory is fantastic.”

Florida State (293-300-307-900) captured the team title for the second time in the last four seasons. The Seminoles finished 11-strokes ahead of the defending champion Florida Gators (305-294-312-911). South Florida (309-303-306-918) finished third with Miami (311-301-318-930) taking fourth.
