Lengyel National Champion in Platform Diving

Athens, Ga. (hurricanesports.com) – Senior diver Imre Lengyel is the 2002NCAA champion in platform diving after winning the event at the NCAA Men’s Swimming& Diving Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the Universityof Georgia in Athens.

Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary) took first place in dominating fashion by scoringa 620.25 in the finals round. Justin Dumais of Texas was a distant second at 577.15.UM freshman Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City) finished in fourth place with a scoreof 553.00 and junior Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio) finished in 10th (490.60).

Lengyel took second in the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the Zone B Diving Championshipsin Lexington, Kentucky to qualify for nationals. He was named 2002 BIG EAST MostOutstanding Men’s Diver after capturing BIG EAST titles in both the 1- and 3-meterevents in February. In 2000, Lengyel competed for the Hungarian Olympic team andwas first honored as the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Men’s Diver.

Kyle Prandi won the platform event last year. Miami divers have now claimed at leastone individual national championship in each of the past 12 years.

The University of Miami finished in 13th place in the team standings with 106points. Texas won the 2002 Team Championship (512 points) with Stanford a closesecond (501) and Auburn third (365.5).

Miami had the best finish for the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh was 24th with 18 points.
