Women Head to Austin for NCAA's

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The Miami women’s swimming anddiving qualifiers head to Austin, Texas to compete at the 2002 Women’s NCAA Swimming& Diving Championships at the University of Texas. The three-day event beginsMarch 21 with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals set for 7 p.m. each day.
The Hurricanes will send a total of six competitors to this year’s meet includingfour swimmers and two divers.
The Miami swimmers are led by sophomore Manon van Rooijen (Westdorpe, Holland).Van Rooijen was named 2002 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Women’s Swimmer after shatteringthree BIG EAST records at the conference championship meet in Uniondale, N.Y.on February 21-23.
She will compete in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Van Rooijen islisted 4th on the official psych sheet in the 100 free (49.11), 7th in the 200free (1:46.48) and 41st in the 50 free (23.22).
Junior Christine Williams (Trenton, N.J.) will compete in the 50 free (52nd at23.32) and 100 free (50th at 50.50).
The Miami relay team of Van Rooijen, Williams, junior Megan Kinsella (Calgary,Canada) and freshman Erin Johns (Saltsburg, Pa.) will also compete in the 200,400 and 800 free relays.
Senior Michelle Davison (Columbia, S.C.) and junior Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham,Ill.) will compete for Miami in the diving events.
Last year, Miami finished 14th (88.5 points) out of 45 teams at the 2001 NCAAChampionships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Uniondale, N.Y. UM namedfour divers to the All-America team including Jenny Keim (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)who finished second in the 3-meter springboard and fourth in the 1-meter springboard.Katie Beth Bryant took second in the 1-meter springboard while Michelle Davisontook eighth in the 3-meter springboard competition.
The 2002 Men’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled for March28-30 at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgiain Athens.
