Divers Secure Spots at NCAA Championships

Lexington, Ky. (hurricanesports.com) – Miami divers secured their trips tothe NCAA Championships by sweeping the top spots in the Zone B Qualifying Meetat the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Kentucky inLexington.

The top five divers in each of today’s two events will go on to the NCAA Championships.The meet concludes tomorrow with the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter competitions.

Senior Michelle Davison (Columbia, S.C.) finished first in the women’s 1-metercompetition with 301.45 points. Junior Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) tookfourth place with 291.85 points.

Sophomore Melanie Rinaldi was 10th with 264.00 points.

For the Miami men, junior Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio) won the men’s 3-meterevent with a score of 589.60. Senior Imre Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary) finishedsecond with 586.75.

Freshman Miguel Vlezquez was 10th (525.20 ) and senior Stefan Ahrens finished12th (518.60).

Lengyel competed for the 2000 Hungarian Olympic team and was named 2002 BIG EASTMost Outstanding Men’s Diver after capturing BIG EAST titles in both the 1- and3-meter events. Kyle Prandi was the conference’s outstanding diver last seasonwhile Lengyel won the honor in 2000.

Michelle Davison competed for the USA Olympic team in 2000 and was honored asthe 2002 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Women’s Diver. Davison finished first in the1-meter diving event at the 2002 BIG EAST Championships while Katie Beth Bryanttook the top spot in the 3-meter competition.

The 2002 Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled for March21-23 at the University of Texas. The men’s championship is scheduled for March28-30 and will be held at the University of Georgia.
