On Sunday, February 11th 2002 the University of Miami retired the jersey offormer catcher Charles Johnson. Johnson was the Hurricanes starting catcherfor three seasons in 1990-1992. He was a first-round selection of hishometown Florida Marlins following the 1992 season. From nearby Ft. Pierce,Johnson was an All-American for the orange and green, as well as beingselected a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award in 1991. His efforts duringthe 1991 season landed him a spot on the USA National Team. A multiple goldglove winner in the Major Leagues, Johnson returned to the Florida Marlinsin the 2001 season. Just this past year, Johnson was elected to theUniversity of Miami Sports Hall of Fame. Former coach Ron Fraser, whosenumber #1 is also retired, was on hand to catch the ceremonial first pitch.
