Junior Jim Burt of the defending National Championship baseball team, has been selected the September 2001 Academic All-Star after leading the Hurricanes off the field, as well as on.

Burt, a standout member of the Hurricane outfield, is majoring in Business and received a 4.0 GPA last spring. Also during the spring, Burt assisted Miami to the 2001 College World Series Championship as the Hurricanes swept through the series with wins over Tennessee, Southern California and Stanford. The team’s top defensive reserve in 2001, Burt made crucial outs for UM during the ninth innings of each of the four games played at the CWS.

Burt, the son of former UM football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion New York Giant Jim Burt, came to Coral Gables in 2000 after a standout prep career at Bergen Catholic High School in Allendale, NJ. The younger Burt redshirted his first season with the Hurricanes in 2000 before making an impact this past year. A former member of the National Honor Society in high school, Burt also graduated in the top five percent of his class. He entered the fall with a 3.78 GPA.
