Hurricanes Stifled By Virginia Pitching

Coral Gables, Fla. – Virginia starter Brandon Creswell (7-2) pitched a complete-game shut-out as the Cavaliers (24-23)defeated the University of Miami baseball team (33-11), 5-0, in front of2,247 fans at Mark Light Stadium Friday night.
Creswell, a two-time ACC Pitcher of the Week this season, allowed just fourhits with four walks and eight strikeouts for the victory. The loss alsoends UM’s five-game win streak. The last shut-out loss for the Hurricanes athome was Texas A&M, 4-0, during the 1995 NCAA Regionals.
UM starter Kiki Bengochea (6-3) earned the loss after going 7.2 innings withseven hits, five runs (all earned), three walks and six strikeouts.
The five Virginia runs came off two home runs from Dan Street (two-run shotto centerfield in the fourth) and Hunter Wyant (three-shot to right center inthe fifth).
Virginia opened the scoring, 2-0, in the top of the fourth inning on atwo-run homerun to centerfield by Street, also scoring Mark Rueffert on theshot. Rueffert had earlier reached base with a single to right field.
The Cavaliers extended their lead, 5-0, in the fifth on Wyant’s three-runhome run to left center, also scoring David Stone and Shawn McCleary. Stonereached base on a hit by pitch and took second on a throwing error onBengochea. McCleary walked.
Kevin Howard (2), Mike Rodriguez and Kevin Mannix recorded hits, foursingles, for the Hurricanes.
The two teams continue the series on Saturday at 7 p.m. Fox Sports NetFlorida will televise the Saturday game live with WPLG Channel 10sportscaster Frank Forte, WQAM’s Joe Zagacki and former UM standout WichoHernandez. UM’s flagship station Sports Radio 560 WQAM, with the voice ofthe Hurricanes Marc Vandermeer, will also carry the Saturday game, along withUM’s Spanish Broadcast Network on WACC 830 AM Radio Paz with Jerry delCastillo and Pepe Campos. The two teams conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Miami will immediatelyreturn to action on Monday against No. 9 Stetson at 7 p.m. at Mark LightStadium. The game was not originally on the schedule, but was later added tomake up a date when the second game against Florida in Gainesville wascancelled.
