Todd Widom advances to quarterfinals of ITA Regional Championships

Knoxville, Tenn. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami’s Todd Widom defeated Vanderbilt’s Scott Brown in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Omni Hotels Region III Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center on the University of Tennesse campus in Knoxville, Tenn.
Widom, who has taken each match of the championships in straight sets, will face No. 3 seed Daniel Klemtez of Middle Tennessee State in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
In doubles action, UM’s top tandem of Andrew Golub and Widom advanced to the third round with an opening match win over Kentucky’s Rahim Esmail and Gustav Pousette 8-3 and an upset victory over Florida’s No. 4 seed Hamid Mirzadeh and Chris McDonald.
Miami’s duo of Andrew McDade and Jose Lieberman also took a first round decision knocking off Mercer’s Nima Akhavein and Felipe Echeverri 8-5. McDade and Lieberman then advanced to the round of 16 by default.
Additionally, the Hurricane tandem of Tarik El Bassiouni and Maxime LePivert dropped an 8-6 decision to Murray State’s Nikola Aracic and Alex Hoyern in the opening round of doubles play.
The Hurricanes are back in action Saturday. There will be two rounds of doubles play and a round of singles action beginning at 9 a.m.
