Swimming & Diving Travels To Tallahassee

Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Swimming and Diving team will open the 2001-02 season at Florida State this Saturday, October 13 in Tallahassee, FL.

The UM women return a talented of performers from last year’s squad that finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.

Miami returns three All-American divers including junior Katie Beth Bryant, senior Emily Spychala and senior Michelle Davidson. Bryant is the defending BIG EAST Champion in the 1-meter springboard.

In the swimming events the Hurricanes will look to sophomore Manon van Rooijen. As a freshman, van Rooijen broke the school-record in the 200-freestyle, and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in 100-yard freestyle to lead Miami to a fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.

In 2000, van Rooijen won a silver medal at the Olympic games as a member of Holland’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay.

The UM men will once again be led a strong group of divers. Leading the way will be 2001 BIG EAST Diver of the Year and defending NCAA 10-meter champion Kyle Prandi.

Also returning are seniors Stefan Ahrens and Imre Lengyel. Both competed at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. Lengyel finished 9th in the 3-meter at the World Championships for his native Hungary earlier this summer.
