Women's Rowing Dominates Head Of The Indian Creek

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami varsity women’s crew launched the 2001 fall racing season successfully winning the all points trophy at the ninth annual Head of the Creek Regatta on Sunday at Indian Creek near the UM Boathouse at the Ronald Shane Watersports Center on Miami Beach.
Miami finished with 146 overall points, ahead of Central Florida (122), Barry (45), FIU (36), Lynn (20) and Rollins (10).
The regatta was highlighted with the Hurricanes sweep of the Championship Four race. Miami’s “B” entry won the race with a time of 18:13.4, ahead of the “A” entry (18:57.2 and “C” entry (20:08.5). Barry’s two entries finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 20:08.7 and 20:41.5. UCF finished sixth (21:28.7).
Miami’s “B” entry featured coxswain Meg Venezia and rowers Jacqui Julien, Mandy Turner, Kate Weeden and Marijka VanderPol. The “A” boat included coxswain Jenny Lee and rowers Monika Manios, Jenny Krawec, Ananda Chou and Bridget Gallagher. The “C” boat included coxswain April Runkle and rowers Ali Nelson, Caroline Stuart, Julie Crane and Jordanna Heywood.
In the Championship Eight race, UCF finished first with a time of 16:48.5. Miami took 2-3-4 in the event. The Hurricanes’ “A” entry finished second with a time of 17:22.9, followed by the “B” entry (17:33.2) and “C” entry (18:34.2). Barry took fifth (18:38.2) and UCF “B” sixth (18:47.8).
Miami’s “A” eight included coxswain Gaby Scovazzo and rowers Weeden, Nelson, Crane, Yassi Hairinia, Rachel Sander, Sara Grossman, Runkle and Melissa Saunders. The “B” boat featured Venezia, Manios, Krawec, Turner, VanderPol, Russlee Panepinto, Bernadette Lack, Laraine Martin and Heywood. The “C” boat included Lee, Julien, Gallagher, Chou, Liz Miller, Tyler McHugh-Merrill, Maggie Knuth, Deirdre Curran and Dorothy Clay.
The women’s club eight entry finished second behind with UCF (17:24.7) with a time of 17:32.5. UCF “B” placed third 18:25.7.
The club eight entry included Lee, Stephanie Tilley, Stuart, Grossman, Allison Rand, Tracy Anzalone, Panepinto, Yennisha Pino and Lia Prevolis.
The varsity women return to action on Oct. 21 at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston.
