Women's Tennis Travels To Lady Seminole Classic

Tallahassee, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The Miami women’s tennis team travels to Tallahassee for the annual Lady Seminole Fall Classic at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State campus.
The three-day invitational features host-school FSU, along with Miami, Georgia Southern, Texas Christian, South Florida, Florida International, Florida, Auburn, Miami, Stetson, UCF and Jacksonville.
Match play begins Friday, Oct. 5 at 8:00 a.m. and will continue throughout the weekend, with the finals being held Sunday afternoon. A portion of the schedule will take place at the tennis courts on the Florida A&M campus.
Miami’s Mari Toro and Marcy Hora each received a first round bye in Flight A singles. Toro is seed fourth in the event’s top flight. UM’s Staci Stevens, Sara Robbins and Sihem Bennacer will compete in Flight B singles, with Stevens as the top-seed. Lauren Scaglione, Igne DeVilliers and Abby Smith will compete in the tournament’s C Flight singles.
The Hurricanes opened up the fall competing at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., last weekend, where they split their individual matches with host-school Georgia and Big 12 power Kansas State. The tournament concluded on Sunday with Miami winning seven of 11 matches against the Wildcats. The Bulldogs won six of nine matches against UM at the start of the weekend.
The Hurricanes were led by Hora, who won both of her singles matches against Georgia and Kansas State, as well as both doubles matches with partner Toro.
Miami returns two seniors, two juniors and three sophomores, while welcoming three newcomers to the program this season. With four returning starters and an amazing pool of incoming talent, the 2001-02 season looks to be one filled with excitement for the tennis team.
