Danny Matienzo Keeps Offense On Track At The Cape

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Miami junior-to-be Danny Matienzo had a brief visit home following the Hurricanes recent College World Series championship in Omaha, Neb. during June. Nearly a week following Miami’s 12-1 title game triumph over Stanford at Rosenblatt Stadium, Matienzo found himself in the starting line-up for the Brewster Whitecaps fo the famed Cape Cod League.

Brewster, the 2000 Arnold Mycock Cape League Championship Trophy winner, had already played 12 games into the schedule. Since arriving on the Cape, Matienzo has logged starts at catcher, designated hitter and first base. His team went into the all-star break during late July in fourth place in the Eastern Division with a 15-19-1 record.

Going into the break Matienzo was batting .244, third-best on the club, with seven runs scored, 22 hits, five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, six walks, 28 strikeouts and four errors. His five doubles ties for the team-high, while his two homers rank second. His 11 RBI are fourth.

He was recently the starting designated hitter for the East Squad at the 2001 Sprint PCS Cape League All-Star Game at Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field in Falmouth, Mass. A total of 3,000 fans came out to see Matienzo and the East All-Stars defeat the West All-Stars 10-1.

In the game, Matienzo went 2-for-4, including a double and a run scored. A 2001 College World Series All-Tournament selection, Matienzo was one of four East All-Stars to garner a two-hit afternoon.
