The University of Miami, which finished second in all the major polls last season, has been selected as The Football News’ preseason No. 1 team for the 2001 college football season, the publication announced.

The Hurricanes, who finished 11-1 last season and beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl, were picked ahead of Florida, Texas and BIG EAST rival Virginia Tech. Defending national champion Oklahoma completes the publication’s top five.

The Football News Preseason Top 25 is the fourth preseason magazine ranking to list the Hurricanes atop the national rankings. Street & Smith’s, Preview Sports and Texas Football also ranked Miami No. 1.
