Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The Florida Marlins hosted University of Miami head coach Jim Morris and a select group of the National Champion Hurricanes at Saturday’s game with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Morris, the 2001 Collegiate Baseball National Coach of the Year, was joined during the pre-game festivities by former Hurricanes Pat Burrell (Phillies), Charles Johnson (Marlins) and Dave Berg (Marlins) for the ceremonial first pitch.
Florida head coach Tony Perez also presented the College World Series champions with a placque to honor their achievement.
The Marlins also hosted Morris following the Hurricanes’ 1999 National Championship victory over Florida State.
Miami won the 2001 College World Series with a decisive 12-1 victory over Stanford in the title game. The Hurricanes had won all four games at the CWS, including victories over Tennessee (21-13 and 12-6) and Southern California (4-3). In all, Miami had ended the season on a national-best 17-game win streak, including all nine games in the postseason.
The CWS title was Miami’s fourth and second in the last three years. Prior to Morris’ 1999 and 2001 titles, UM had won the National Championship under legendary head coach Ron Fraser in 1982 and 1985.
The Hurricanes finished 53-12 in 2001, the highest in wins (53) and winning percentage (.815) since Morris arrived in 1994. Miami also led the nation in stolen bases (228) and relief pitching appearances (223). A school record 11 players were drafted off the 2001 squad, with two more signing free agent pro contracts.
