Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – University of Miami sophomores Kiki Bengochea and Kevin Howard were among the 22 collegiate players selected to the 2001 USA Baseball National Team.
After four days of tryouts in Tucson, AZ, the group of 29 players was paired down to 22. Bengochea, a RHP from Miami (Columbus HS), has now made the USA National Team for two straight years. Last summer, he recorded a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA in 20 innings of work. Howard, a third baseman from Thousand Oaks, CA (West Lake), is in his first stint with the USA National Team.
Team USA will play 29 games on the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour, following their first game of the summer last night, which they won 5-1 over the Chicago Cubs rookie level affiliate at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, AZ. Team USA will then travel overseas on Wednesday to the 30th annual USA vs Japan Collegiate All-Star Series, which this year will be played in Japan.
