Miami qualified for its 19th College World Series following a two-game sweep of Clemson in the Coral Gables Super Regional at Mark Light Stadium last weekend. The 19 CWS appearances, all since UM’s first trip in 1974, are the most in this 28-year span than any other program. UM has forged a 39-30 (.565) overall record in CWS games, which places fourth all-time in winning percentage. Miami has won National Championships in 1999, 1985 and 1982. The Hurricanes also placed second in 1996, third in 1995 and 1997 and fifth in 1994.

HURRICANES BRING CWS ON NATIONAL-HIGH WIN STREAK —
Miami’s current 13-game win streak is the longest in the nation. Additionally, the Hurricanes have won 16 of the last 17 games and 24 of the past 27. With the five consecutive games won at Mark Light Stadium during the Coral Gables Regional and Super Regional, UM extended its home postseason win streak to 16 games since a loss to North Carolina in the 1998 Atlantic Regional.

MIAMI CLAIMED 1999 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN LAST VISIT TO OMAHA —
Miami’s last visit to Omaha in 1999 was a pleasant one, as the Hurricanes swept through the field in four games to their third national championship. UM opened the CWS with an 8-4 win over Rice. The Hurricanes followed with consecutive victories over Alabama, 8-1 and 5-2, respectively. Miami claimed the title with a 6-5 victory over in-state rival Florida State. Four UM players were named to the 1999 CWS All-Tournament team. First baseman Kevin Brown was UM’s hero of that championship victory over FSU slugging a solo home run and a bases-clearing three-RBI double.

MIAMI ALSO WON CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1982 AND 1985 –
Legendary head coach Ron Fraser led UM to the College World Series title twice during his 30 year tenure with the Hurricanes, in 1982 and 1985.

Miami’s first national title came with a 9-3 victory over Wichita State in the College World Series finale. Miami had swept through the field, in five games, for Fraser’s first championship. The title marked the first time since 1966 that a team east of the Mississippi won, as well as the first time since 1955 that a team from the Southeast claimed the trophy. Five days earlier, UM had claimed a 4-3 victory over the Shockers with the famous “Grand Illusion” trick play. Reliever Dan Smith was the Tournament MVP.

UM’s 1985 championship came with a 10-6 victory over Texas in the finale of the CWS tournament. UM had to defeat Texas twice to claim the title, after dropping its second game of the CWS to the Longhorns five days earlier. Miami did so, winning the first game 2-1, over All-American starter Greg Swindell. UM jumped out early in the championship game, scoring four runs in the third and a 10-3 lead by the end of six. Greg Ellena was named the Tournament MVP. Earlier in the CWS, UM defeated a stellar Mississippi State team, 6-5, that included future MLB stars Will Clark, Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Brantley and Bobby Thigpen.

Miami and Tennessee have met eight times with each team claiming four victories. The two schools have played two three-games since Jim Morris arrived in 1994, with each school sweeping on their home field. Tennessee took the last set of games in Knoxville during the 1996 season. Miami swept the Volunteers in Coral Gables in 1994. The first meetings between Miami and Tennessee occured in Coral Gables in 1989 with each team winning once.

MIAMI VS. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA —
The Hurricanes lead the all-time series with Southern California 7-4. The Trojans, however, lead UM 4-2 in games played at the College World Series. During regular season play, UM picked up two victories over the USC at the Oklahoma Tournament in 1985. UM also swept USC in a three-game series in Coral Gables in 1981.

MIAMI SWEEPS CLEMSON IN SUPER REGIONALS —
Miami swept the first two games with Clemson, 10-8 and 14-6, to advance to the College World Series. The two-game sweep in the best-of-three series was the second time UM had performed the feat, joining 1999. UM also swept the three opponents in the Regional.

Game No. 2 vs. the Tigers was tied, 4-4, going into the seventh when the Hurricanes erupted for a season-high eight runs. From that point, Miami never looked back scoring twice in the ninth to close off the game. UM stole 10 bases in the game to tie the NCAA postseason record. Clemson had been the last to perform the feat in 1988. The 14 runs scored was the most in seven Super Regional games played since the format began in 1999. A sellout crowd of 5,236 attended the game, the second-highest of the season. UM also extended their record to 11-0 this season in the new road “gray” uniforms. T.J. Prunty earned the win in relief, as the Hurricanes used a total of seven pitchers. Danny Matienzo and Charlton Jimerson each homered and had multiple RBI.

Game No. 1 vs. Clemson was another hard fought game as the lead swayed back and forth throughout. Mike DiRosa’s two-RBI single in the seventh inning would be all UM needed to hold on for the 10-8 decision. Dan Smith picked up the win in relief of Tom Farmer. In the game, Javy Rodriguez registered his 62nd and 63rd stolen bases of the season to tie and break the 27-year-old UM record held by Orlando Gonzalez (1974).

The Hurricanes now hold a 21-13-1 record all-time vs. Clemson, including a 9-5 mark under Jim Morris. In the postseason, UM and Clemson have met 12 times with the Hurricanes holding a 9-3 advantage. Additionally, UM has won the last eight meetings with Clemson in the postseason.

EX-GRIDIRON PLAYERS EARN VICTORIES IN SUPER REGIONAL —
Former University of Miami varsity football players Dan Smith and T.J. Prunty each picked up pitching victories in relief vs. Clemson on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Smith earned the win in game No. 1 with 0.2 inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Prunty picked the victory in game No. 2 after pitching 0.2 inning with one strikeout. Smith, a tight end for the Hurricanes in 1998 and 1999, was the primary back-up to current NFL players Bubba Franks (Green Bay) and Mondriel Fulcher (Oakland). This past season, Prunty, an All-American quarterback at St. Paul Academy, directed the scout team for the No.2-ranked Sugar Bowl champion Hurricanes. Prunty was also a 20th round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins following his senior season.

THREE SEASONS OF NEW FORMAT, THREE SUPER REGIONAL APPEARANCES —
Miamiwas one six teams never to miss the Super Regional round in the three years of the new postseason format. Miami was joined by Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Southern California and Stanford.

Miami opened the Regional with a 14-6 win over Patriot League champion Bucknell, followed by a 6-2 victory over Southeastern Conference at-large Florida. UM claimed the championship on Sunday with a 16-8 win over Trans America Athletic Conference at-large Stetson.

The Regional marked the third consecutive season, in the three years of the new NCAA format, that the Hurricanes have swept through competition to advance to the Super Regionals.

The regional championship also marks UM’s eighth consecutive since 1994, as well as eighth consecutive won at Mark Light Stadium since 1992. Miami has won its regional tournament in each of the eight seasons under Jim Morris.

The 12 total bases tied the UM postseason record, while coming one shy of the school record.

With his current 98 career stolen bases, Javy Rodriguez stands in eighth place all-time. During the Super Regional he past Gino DiMare (93, 1989-92), Bill Wrona (95, 1981-83) and Gonzalez (96, 1973-74).

He recently extended the record to 36 in game No. 1 vs. New York Tech before getting his first caught stealing since the FIU game on February 7. For the year, he is 49-of-51 on stolen base attempts. The previous school record was 30 straight by Joel Green over the 1969 and 1970 seasons.

CURRENT UM BASE STEALERS AMONG PROGRAM’S ALL-TIME BEST —
The Hurricanes top four base stealers in 2001, Javy Rodriguez (66), Mike Rodriguez (49), Marcus Nettles (43) and Charlton Jimerson (24), combine to become one of the most prolific groups in UM history.

The first weekend the state of Florida placed a tournament-high nine teams in the postseason, led by Miami (at-large), Florida State (ACC at-large), Central Florida (TAAC champion), Florida (SEC at-large), Florida International (Sun Belt at-large), Stetson (TAAC at-large), Jacksonville (TAAC at-large), South Florida (Conference USA at-large) and Bethune-Cookman (MEAC champion).

In the Super Regionals, which consist of 16 teams, the state of Florida is tied with California with three teams (Miami, Florida State and FIU).

BROWN’S BIG BAT BEATS STETSON FOR REGIONAL TITLE —
Miami won the Coral Gables Regional with a 16-8 win over Stetson on Sunday. Kevin Brown accounted for 10 of the UM runs with his three home run performance. His home runs were a grand slam and two three-run shots. After Brian Walker was replaced for the start of the fifth inning, Dan Smith earned the win in relief with 3.0 innings, one hit and one strikeout. Kevin Howard, Danny Matienzo, Kevin Mannix and Greg Lovelady also had multiple-hit efforts. With the game tied 4-4 going into the bottom of three, Brown hit a grand slam to put UM up for good. Each time Stetson would get closer, 9-7 going into the bottom of six, Brown would assist UM to a larger lead.

The win over the Hatters moved UM’s record to a perfect 5-0 in the postseason and 107-43 all-time since 1947.

UM had also defeated Stetson, 10-9, during the regular season on April 30 at Mark Light Stadium. After the Hatters tied the game, 9-9, off Frank Corr’s two-out three-run home run in the top of the ninth, Javy Rodriguez hit a walk-off single with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.

MIAMI MAKES IT 13 STRAIGHT OVER GATORS AT HOME —

Only Miami and Florida State have met more times since the 1951 season. Since the 1994 season, Jim Morris has gone 20-14 against the Gators, including a 17-2 mark in Coral Gables.
