Top-Ranked Baseball Begins Title Quest At Home

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami will be making its NCAA-record 29th consecutive regional appearance and 30th overall, May 25-27, as the top-ranked Hurricanes were selected as one of the 16 NCAA Regional sites for the upcoming 2001 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

UM’s Mark Light Stadium on the Coral Gables campus will once again serve as host-site for the fifth straight season and 18th time since 1973.

The 2001 Coral Gables Regional will consist of a four-team double-elimination tournament, featuring the top-ranked Hurricanes. The remaining three teams and seeding will be learned next Monday, May 21, at 3 p.m. on ESPN. The winner of the Regional will move on to the Round of 16 Super Regional Tournament, sites to be awarded on Monday, May 28. The eight Super Regional champions advance to the College World Series at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE, June 9-15.

The Hurricanes (41-12), who hold the No. 1 ranking in the Baseball America and Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches polls, are joined by the following 15 programs: Cal State Fullerton (Fullerton, CA), Clemson (Clemson, SC), East Carolina (Wilson, NC), Florida State (Tallahassee, FL), Georgia (Athens, GA), Louisiana State (Baton Rouge, LA), Nebraska (Lincoln, NE), Notre Dame (South Bend, IN), Ohio State (Columbus, OH), Rice (Houston, TX), South Carolina (Columbia, SC), Southern California (Los Angeles, CA), Stanford (Palo Alto, CA),Tennessee (Knoxville, TN) and Tulane (New Orleans, LA).

Miami is one of four teams to have hosted a regional the last five seasons, including Louisiana State (12), Stanford (6) and Florida State (5). Four first-time hosts are among the current 16 sites: East Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska and Tulane. Seven schools are repeating as hosts from last season: Miami, Louisiana State, Cal State Fullerton, Clemson, Florida State, Southern California and Stanford. ECU will be the lone school not to play at an on-campus facility. The Pirates call Greenville, NC home, but will play its Regional in nearby Wilson.

UM has won its Regional 15 of the last 17 years, and have went on to the College World Series in 14 of those seasons. Miami has 18 College World Series appearances overall since making its first trip in 1974. Miami also has three National Championships in 1982, 1985 and 1999.

UM returns to action next weekend against New York Tech in a three-game series beginning Friday. UM’s Spanish Brodacast Network in WACC 830 AM Radio Paz will pick up all three games.
